Mori Wins ETOM Overall Title
LANGKAWI, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Simone Mori of team Jura Suisse from Switzerland was crowned the overall champion in the inaugural Gamuda Eagle Tour of Malaysia (ETOM) which ended here Sunday.
The Italian, winner in the third stage climb up Gunung Raya two days ago, accumulated a total of 9 hours 17 minutes 00 seconds.
Iranian Ghader Mizbani finished second overall on 9:17:52s while first stage winner Glen Chadwick of team Down Under was third on 9:18:27s.
"I'm really happy with the victory. I'm looking forward to ride and win if the Jura Suisse team are invited to the Le Tour de Langkawi next year," Mori told reporters.
"The team have done a good job and they (riders) worked hard for me. Without their help, I might not be able to win the title," he added.
Rune Jogert of team Krone from Norway claimed Sunday's final stage when he won the 50km criterium race held at Kuah town after outsprinting Tommy Evans of the Irish national team and Matnur Muslimin of Selangor's Sweet Nice.
In a bunch finish at the Marmar Square (Dataran Marmar), Jogert who won stage four Saturday, again showed his sprinting prowess when he crossed the finishing line first ahead of a group of riders.
Jogert clocked 1 hour 03 minutes 30 seconds.
It was also a sweet victory for Norwegian Jogert when he won the King of the Sprint title after accumulating a total of 57 points, 13 points ahead of Paul Griffin of the Irish national team and Matnur who collected 43 points.
Mizbani, who powered team Telekom Malaysia to win the Asian overall title in this year's Le Tour de Langkawi, ended his campaign as the King of the Mountains.
Ireland's Philip Deignan was the best under-23 rider in the tour, beating Malaysia's Suhardi Hassan with a 49-second advantage.
The Irish national team were the best team overall followed by the Iranian and Austrian national teams.
The Kuala Lumpur team finished eighth, the best among the four Malaysian teams.
