Close to the Penang Museum on Queen Street is the Sri Mariamman Temple built in 1883. Highly ornate, it is filled with statues of Hindu deities. Here can be found a statue of Lord Subramaniam decorated with gold, silver, diamonds and emeralds.
This statue is used in a chariot procession during the Thaipusam festival which usually falls in late January. Opening hours are from early morning till evening. Permission to enter must be obtained from temple officials.
