The Sultan Mahmud Bridge links Kuala Terengganu to Pulau Duyung, an island noted for its traditional boat-building. Local craftsmen still make trawlers in the traditional way by working from memory and without any blueprint.

The island is also noted for its dried and salted fish and crackers industry.
