Täglich Direktverbindungen von Singapur über Kuala Lumpur und Butterworth nach Bangkok (und zurück nach Singapur). Mit dem Luxuszug Eastern and Oriental Express kann man eine 41stündige Rundfahrt von Singapur über Kuala Lumpur und Bangkok und zurück nach Singapur unternehmen.
 

Abgesehen von den kleinen Stichlinien sind nur die Nord-Süd-Hauptlinie zwischen Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Butterworth und Thailand sowie die Verbindung durch das Landesinnere von Tumpat über Kuala Krai, Kuala Lipis nach Gemas interessant.

In Ost-Malaysia gibt es nur eine Verbindung in Sabah zwischen Tanjung Aru, südlich von Kota Kinabalu, und Tenom.

Auf der Hauptlinie Singapore-Kuala Lumpur-Penang (787 km) verkehren zwischen den Großstädten tagsüber die Schnellzüge Ekspres Rakyat und Ekspres Sinaran Pagi bzw. Petang. Die Plätze sind reserviert, und man hat die Wahl zwischen einer klimatisierten 1. und einer klimatisierten bzw. nicht klimatisierten 2. Klasse. Da die Klimaanlage auf Hochtouren läuft, sollte man warme Sachen dabei haben. Es kann auch nicht schaden, etwas zu essen mitzunehmen, denn das Angebot im Speisewagen ist sehr spärlich. Der Zug Ekonomi Siang hat nur 3. Klasse-Grossraumabteile.

Zudem fahren noch Bummelzüge, Tren Mel. Vor allem durch das Landesinnere bieten sie, so unbequem sie auch sein mögen, ein Reiseerlebnis besonderer Art, denn einer Fahrt in den überfüllten Abteilen ermöglicht hautnahe Erlebnisse des einheimischen Alltags.

Für längere Strecken und mit viel Gepäck empfiehlt es sich allerdings, die schnelleren Züge zu buchen, den Ekspres Timuran (2. Klasse und Ekonomi; Schlafwagen) von Tumpat nach Singapore oder den Ekspres Wau (2 Plus, 2. Klasse und Ekonomi; Schlafwagen) von Tumpat nach Kuala Lumpur über Gemas oder an der Westküste den Senandung Malam (2 Plus, 2. Klasse und Ekonomi; Schlafwagen).

Auf längeren Nachtfahrten lohnt es sich, ein Bett zu buchen. Es kostet in der 2. Klasse ac RM 11,50 oben und RM 14 unten, sowie in der ersten Klasse RM 50 bzw. RM 70 . Im International Express nach Bangkok kosten die Liegewagen in der zweiten Klasse RM 28,50 unten bzw. RM 22,30 oben.

Der Ekspres Langkawi verkehrt nachts mit 1. (2 Plus) und 2. Klasse-Schlafwagen, 2. Klasse-Sitzplätzen und Kelas Ekonomi zwischen Kuala Lumpur und Hat Yai. Man kann 30 Tage für die 1., 2. und 3. Klasse im voraus das Ticket buchen, wenn eine Platz- bzw. Bett-Reservierung vorgenommen wird.

Fahrtunterbrechungen sind nur bei Reisen über 200 km möglich. Kinder zwischen 4 und 12 Jahren zahlen den halben Preis, kleinere Kinder fahren umsonst.

Freigepäck: 1. Klasse 60 kg, 2. Klasse 35 kg und 3. Klasse 25 kg. Über die gute Homepage der Kereta Api Tana Melayu, der malaiischen Eisenbahnen kann man nicht nur die neuesten Fahrpläne und -preise abrufen, sondern auch Buchungen vornehmen, die prompt per E-Mail und einer Buchungsnummer bestätigt werden. Für ausländische Touristen mag der KTM Rail Pass (eng) interessant sein.
